In the meantime I wonder... is there anyway you are able to do anything with mijoshop?
Being built around opencart, its hands down one of the best options for Joomla. I know its not native joomla, but the guys over at mijocart really did a trick making it fully integrated (not a bridge!)

Mijoshop is a great component for Joomla and Opencart.

Currently we do not have a plan for designing Joomla template with this component.

We will save your idea and hope that in the next time, we can make some templates for this component.
