I'm researching php.net... looks as though it may not have been included as part of the original php compile.

it is in /usr/local/lib or can be modified (preferrably) in cpanel/whm
I'll do the homework and report back here with the result in case others have the same challenge.

I had to set the option for mbstring and recompile Apache / php to enable it... case solved. Thanks for your help in pointing me in the right direction!
